Simple Tips To Protect Yourself From Being Hacked
You may assume that your website has nothing worth hacking, antivirus is keeping your computer safe or your email and social media are not that important. But the great risk you may be taking is having your online identity stolen, your data accessed by criminals without you knowing anything about it.
A weakly secured online identity can be used as a mask to relay criminal actions so that crimes committed by the hacker will be done using your name and identity.
In my previous article, “7 Cyber Attacks That Prove That You May Be at risk of Being Hacked“ I mentioned several instances of these hacking events where antivirus could not prevent the situation. So this article will show you some tips you can use to protect yourself from being a victim of cyber crime.
USE VARIETIES OF DIFFICULT PASSWORDS
Make it difficult for hackers to crack your password by using a different password for your various accounts , you can create a smart password by using capital letter, numbers, and special characters using more than six characters for example : P@55wW0r%Dz^O1d36?, but remember to write it down so that you won’t forget it.
In fact I suggest that you have a password diary where you write your passwords for the various websites you use, this will solve the problem of forgetting your password. If for any reason you are using the same password for all your online accounts your computer, your phone etc. it means that when a hacker gets hold of that password, every other thing you are trying to secure has been exposed.
BE CAREFUL WITH DOWNLOADED STUFF
If you are trying to install a software downloaded from the internet, verify the site you downloaded it from. For example, the Adobe PDF Reader must come from Adobe.com servers. If you are not sure about what a piece of software does from it name, then don’t install it because they are situations where you may download a spyware which could both harm your computer or be used to spy on everything you do on your computer.
Hackers use free software as a bait. Browser add-ons are common examples of this because they usually come bundled with additional “free software”. Some of these add-ons can force you to use a particular search engine, push spammy advertisement to your desktop, control your computer via remote access etc.
BACKUP YOUR DATA
As a failsafe, you need to have backup copies of your confidential files. For instance if the original data gets compromised or the computer that stores the data got hacked, lost or stolen, you can only rely on the backup copies for uninterrupted operation.
an external hard disk is a good example of a backup device, however, you can also backup your files on the cloud. Google, Microsoft, Amazon etc provide cloud storage services in a very secure way. Data stored in the cloud can be synchronized with the data on your PC anytime you connect to the internet which keeps it up to date.
ENCRYPT YOUR DATA
This means the conversion of your data into coded files that cannot be read as plain text. When you Encrypt your sensitive files, it makes it unreadable and encoded even if a hacker or laptop thief manages to access your encrypted files.
While encrypting your data, the 256 bit AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) encryption algorithm is a better encryption option than choosing the DES (Data Encryption Standard). In January, 1999, distributed.net and the Electronic Frontier Foundation collaborated and publicly broke a DES key in 22 hours and 15 minutes.
Also, it is essential to use Keylogger protection when entering passwords to your database, web pages etc. A Keylogger is a type of surveillance software (considered to be either software or spyware) that has the capability to record every keystroke you make to a log file, usually encrypted.
A Keylogger recorder can record instant messages, e-mail, and any information you type at any time using your keyboard.
GET SOME TRAINING ON CYBER SECURITY
Getting a Cyber Security certification should be the most valuable computer qualification for anyone using the computer today.
Becoming a Cyber security professional is the best way of protecting your life’s work. Whatever professional computer skill you have acquired and whatever you have built with years of work and dedication can be sabotaged and frustrated by hackers within minutes by hackers if you are not cyber security literate.
If you will like to get trained as a Cyber Security Expert, I will love to invite you to a FREE Cyber Security SEMINAR holding in Abuja on the 19th of September 2015 (30 Seats Available). This will be the first Cyber Security Seminar for (ICSDL) in the History of Abuja where the International Cyber Security Driver’s License will be Officially Launched in Nigeria.
